How Do I Measure My Bedroom to Fit a New Wardrobe?

A well-chosen wardrobe can transform a bedroom, giving you organised storage and a polished look.

But before you fall for a beautiful design, it’s essential to check that it will fit comfortably in your space. Taking a few careful measurements will help you avoid awkward gaps, doors that won’t open, or a piece that overwhelms the room.

Step 1: Clear and Prepare the Space

Remove any obstacles such as chairs, bedside tables or laundry baskets so you can measure accurately.

Have a tape measure, pencil and notepad ready, and if possible ask a friend to help hold the tape for longer spans.

Step 2: Measure the Floor Area

Start with the width, depth and height of the area where you plan to place the wardrobe.

  • Width: Measure from wall to wall, or between fixed objects such as windows or radiators.

  • Depth: Measure from the back wall out to where the wardrobe front will sit, leaving enough space for doors to swing or sliding panels to glide.

  • Height: Measure floor to ceiling at several points—ceilings can slope or vary slightly.

Step 3: Check Door and Drawer Clearance

If the wardrobe has hinged doors or pull-out drawers, allow extra space in front so they can open fully.

A good rule of thumb is at least 50–60 cm of clearance in front of hinged doors.  For sliding doors, make sure nothing (like a bedside table) will block the sliding track.

Step 4: Account for Skirting Boards and Cornices

Skirting boards can reduce usable depth, and decorative coving at the ceiling may affect height. Measure from the narrowest points to ensure the wardrobe will fit flush.

Step 5: Consider Walkways and Other Furniture

Think about how the wardrobe interacts with the rest of the room.

Leave comfortable walkways—ideally at least 60 cm—between the wardrobe and the bed or other large pieces so the room feels open and easy to move around.

Step 6: Double-Check Access Routes

Finally, measure doorways, stairwells and hallways to confirm the wardrobe can be delivered into the room.  Flat-pack pieces are easier to manoeuvre, but it’s still wise to know the tightest turns.

Taking the time to measure carefully ensures your new wardrobe will fit beautifully and function perfectly from day one. Once you know your exact dimensions, you can shop with confidence—choosing a piece that provides generous storage while enhancing the style of your bedroom.
