What size TV unit do I need for my TV?

Deciding on the right-sized TV unit is important for two reasons. Firstly, the unit you choose will need to be large and strong enough to support the television itself (and anything else that’s connected to it). And secondly, it will undoubtedly be a major feature in your living room – so it will need to complement your overall interior without taking up too much floor space.

But where do you start?

Here's a quick guide on how to find the perfect-sized TV unit for your setup.

Measure your TV’s dimensions

Before purchasing a TV unit, start by measuring the actual dimensions of your TV. TV sizes are typically listed by their diagonal screen measurement, but for the purposes of choosing a unit, you’ll also need to determine the width, height, and depth of the TV.

Measure the width of your TV from one side to the other, being sure to account for the bezels around the screen. Knowing the height and depth of the TV will also help ensure it fits properly on the unit, especially if the TV has a stand or base that requires extra depth.

Choose a unit that’s wider than your TV

As a general rule, your TV unit should be at least a few inches wider than the TV itself. Ideally, you should have at least 6 to 10 inches of space on either side of the screen. This gives the setup a balanced, proportionate look and provides extra surface area for placing decorations or additional electronics like speakers, remotes, or streaming devices.

For example, if you have a 55-inch TV (which typically has an actual width of around 48 inches, because the frame is not accounted for in the specifications), you’ll want a TV unit that is at least 58 to 60 inches wide.

Consider the height of the unit

The height of the TV unit is just as important as its width. To prevent neck strain and keep you comfortable while you’re bingeing your favourite boxsets, the centre of the screen should be at or slightly below your eye level when you’re seated across the room. While you’re at it, it’s worth bearing in mind that the ideal viewing distance is at least 1.5 times the size of your screen.

Most people sit around 30 to 36 inches high when on a sofa, so the height of your TV unit should accommodate this. A unit that’s around 20 to 24 inches tall is typically a good height for most setups, but this can vary depending on your personal preferences and your room’s seating arrangement.

Account for your storage needs

We touched on this earlier, but it’s something that’s easily forgotten! In addition to holding your TV, your TV unit may need to accommodate other items such as media players, games consoles, or ornaments and other decorations.

Many TV units come with shelves, drawers, or cabinets that provide ample space for storing these accessories. If you have a lot of electronics or cables to manage, look for a unit with built-in cable management systems to keep things organised and clutter-free.

Think about the size and layout of your room

The dimensions of the room itself will play a role in determining the right-sized TV unit. An overly large TV unit in a small room can make the space feel cramped, while a small unit in a large room can look disproportionate.

Measure the wall space where you plan to place the unit and ensure it fits well without overwhelming the room. Make sure to leave enough space on either side for easy access and airflow around both the TV and unit.

Go with your sense of style

Whether you prefer a sleek, modern unit with clean lines or a more traditional timber piece, the unit you pick should, of course, match your décor, and be something you’ll love to look at (a lot!) in the years to come.

Lighter finishes can help make a room feel more open, while darker woods and metals can create a cosier, more intimate atmosphere. Our Mia Large TV Unit, complete with its wireless charging features, brings the drama with elements of practicality.

If you’re feeling brave – or just prefer more outlandish choices full stop – TV units in brighter colours or boasting more unusual patterns might be your bag. We love the fascinating grain on our Sunburst Oak 150cm Wide TV Unit, and the distinctly Cornish aesthetic of our Penzance 2 Door Corner TV Unit, which is great for those more awkward rooms where space is at a premium. We also love our Amelie Grey Fluted Wide TV Unit, with its space-age slatted design.
