Make the space underneath your mattress work harder with one of our stylish yet incredibly practical ottoman storage beds.

Designed with a lifting mattress base that reveals a generous storage compartment underneath, ottoman beds provide valuable space for your belongings, particularly in rooms that are on the smaller side.

Our collection includes side- and end-lift designs in sizes from single to super king, with a choice of upholstered, velvet and wooden finishes to complement different bedrooms. Ideal for storing bedding, seasonal clothes and other bulky yet essential belongings, ottoman beds can be useful if your wardrobes and drawers are already working at capacity and you want to create a less cluttered aesthetic without adding more freestanding furniture.

Storage Ottomans FAQs

What can I actually store in an ottoman bed?

Ottoman beds are handy for larger items that take up a disproportionate amount of wardrobe or drawer space. Think spare duvets, pillows, blankets, towels and seasonal bedding, as well as out-of-season clothes, spare coats, bags, and other things that need to be stored out of sight much of the time.

Using zipped fabric storage bags or lightweight boxes inside the ottoman compartment can make it easier to group belongings together and stop a large storage area from becoming disorganised. It’s tempting to try to pack as much into this space as possible, but you should avoid overfilling the compartment or storing items in a way that interferes with the lifting mechanism. You must always follow the weight and usage guidance supplied with the bed, too.

Should I choose a side-lift or end-lift ottoman bed?

One configuration isn’t better than the other. The best mechanism usually depends on where the bed will sit within the room.

An end-lift ottoman opens from the foot of the bed, so it can work well when both sides sit relatively close to bedside furniture or walls but there's plenty of clear space at the bottom. A side-lift design can be more convenient if there's limited clearance on one side of the bed.

Before making a decision, imagine yourself actually accessing the storage. Where will you stand? Is a wall, radiator, chest of drawers or other furniture likely to get in your way? And which side of the mattress will be easiest to approach?

Here at Roseland Furniture, we stock both side- and end-lift ottoman beds, allowing you to choose a product that works most naturally with your bedroom layout. Some products, like our Deacon Multilift Chenille Ottoman Bed, open from the side AND the bottom for complete flexibility.

Is an ottoman bed a good idea for a small bedroom?

Yes, it can be the ideal choice because you're adding storage to floor space that will already be taken up by your bedroom’s biggest piece of furniture. In a smaller bedroom, the alternative might be to squeeze in another chest of drawers, blanket box or cabinet, but this can sometimes result in a crowded look and feel.

Ottoman beds can often be a more practical and versatile solution than drawers, because ottomans open upwards, not outwards. You'll still need enough space to stand comfortably beside the appropriate lifting point.

Is an ottoman bed better than a bed with normal storage drawers?

Drawers are convenient for belongings you use regularly because you can quickly pull one open without lifting the mattress. The trade-off is that you need enough free floor space beside the bed for the drawers to extend.

An ottoman gives you access to a much larger concealed area beneath the mattress and doesn't require drawer-opening space around the frame.

The key is to think about what you need to store. If you want somewhere for your everyday clothes to live, drawers may be more convenient – but if your priority is maximising the amount of hidden storage available for bedding, towels, luggage or seasonal items, an ottoman will often make better use of the bed's footprint.

How easy is it to open and close an ottoman storage bed?

Ottoman beds use a lifting mechanism that assists you when raising and lowering the mattress platform, rather than requiring you to lift the full weight by yourself.

There can still be some resistance in the design – particularly if the mechanism is new – and the experience will vary depending on the individual bed and mattress. Always fit a suitable mattress and follow the assembly and operating instructions supplied with the bed itself.

When you come to access the compartment, lift from the designated point rather than attempting to raise the frame from another position. Keep hands, loose clothing and other objects away from moving components, and make sure the platform is properly raised before you try to get into the storage area. Many of our beds, like our Dorney Ottoman Storage Bed, are designed with a smooth hydraulic system for easy opening.

How can I organise an ottoman bed so things don't get lost underneath?

The best thing to do here is to treat the compartment like a cupboard. Group similar belongings together in labelled bags, boxes or organisers. You might choose to dedicate one section to spare bedding, another to out-of-season clothes and another to towels or guest-room essentials – whatever works for you. Transparent or clearly labelled containers can save you having to search through everything for a single item.

Place the belongings you're most likely to need nearest the point from which you access the compartment and leave the less accessible areas for your seasonal items.

Ottoman beds offer so much storage that it can be tempting to keep things there simply because there’s room for them. Quick seasonal clear-outs a couple of times a year will ensure the space stays useful, rather than a dumping ground for things you forgot you had!

Can an ottoman bed reduce the amount of other bedroom furniture I need?

Yes, and this is one of their biggest advantages.

If bulky bedding, towels and seasonal clothes tend to occupy half your wardrobe, moving them underneath the bed can release that storage for belongings you use more regularly. In a guest bedroom, an ottoman can potentially store spare bedding and guest towels without requiring a separate blanket box.

An ottoman bed won’t necessarily replace a wardrobe or chest of drawers, but it can change how you use the storage that’s available, and how much additional storage furniture you need to invest in. You also get to make a bold style statement with these beds, if you want to. Try our upholstered Francis Premier Velvet Ottoman Storage Bed Frame to

What should I check before buying an ottoman storage bed?

Once you have selected the right mattress size, check the complete external dimensions of the bed and the direction in which its storage mechanism opens. Make sure there's somewhere comfortable to stand when lifting it and consider whether nearby furniture could make it difficult to get into the storage area.

Finally, we always recommend measuring the delivery route as well as the bedroom itself, to make sure there’s enough space for the item as it’s being transported through doors, hallways, stairs and landings. Ottoman beds generally need to be assembled once they reach your home, so before your purchase arrives, clear enough space around the bed’s intended position before carefully following the assembly and operating instructions supplied with your chosen model.
