Bedroom décor ideas for a super-comfy space

Furniture

As a general rule, wooden furniture will give your bedroom a more homely feel. If you’re short on space or don’t want to splash out on timber (or timber effect) drawers, desks, wardrobes, and other units, there are plenty of other cosy styles available. Tallboys are a great option if you need storage but want to take up as little square footage as possible. ‘Hidden’ storage, including under-the-bed compartments and opening footstools, will help you organise your belongings without eating into your square footage. Lower storage units are great for achieving a minimalistic look without cutting into your bedroom’s horizon line.

Bedding

The mattress, duvet, pillows, sheets, and blankets you choose will have a huge bearing on your comfort levels. For extra cosiness (and a splash of opulence), choose:

• High quality sheets made from natural fibres like cotton or linen, with a higher thread count for a more luxurious feel.

• Pillows and cushions of varying thicknesses and firmness so you can mix and match depending on your mood and your sleeping/lounging position.

• Hypoallergenic materials, particularly if you or your sleeping partner are prone to allergies or are sensitive to dust mites. Be sure to adjust your bedding according to the seasons, too. In the colder months, flannel sheets and down comforters provide warmth, whereas during the summer, lightweight quilts and breathable sheets like percale or linen will keep the bed cool.

Ambient lighting

The more natural brightness you can get into your bedroom, the better. But depending on your bedroom’s size and layout, it might not always be possible to flood the space with as much sunlight as you would like – and, for practical reasons, you will also want to have some control over how much of the room is illuminated. So, you need to be smart when it comes to selecting the right kind of lighting for your bedroom, particularly in the winter months, when you won’t see much daylight at all. Harsh ceiling downlights will strip away your cosy bedroom’s sense of comfort and intimacy. Concentrate on low lights, instead, and install dimmer switches so you can adjust the intensity of the light in different areas when you need to. Bulbs with a colour temperature of between 2700k and 3000k will produce a warm glow that’s much more appealing than the jarring glare of traditional strip lighting. Soft bedside lamps are ideal for when you want to curl up with a good book! You can experiment with embellished designs if you want to add a touch of glamour and intrigue to your bedside setup. And if your number one priority is to get a refreshing and uninterrupted sleep, consider blackout curtains or blinds, which will help you create your very own cocoon of tranquillity by blocking out unwanted sunbeams at any time of the day.

Personalised décor

Calming colours are a must. Greys, off-whites, beiges, and pastels are the best bet for creating cosy palettes that are both soothing and sophisticated.

Personalise your cosy bedroom’s look and feel with:

• Textural layers. Find cosy cushions, rugs, blankets and throws that complement your colour scheme and add depth to your design.

• Images that make you happy. From holiday pics to well-known replicas, your artwork will help to bring your aesthetic together, not to mention create an environment that’s wholly your own!

• Interesting greenery. Adding plants to your bedroom will improve the air quality and bring a touch of nature indoors. Low-maintenance plants like succulents, snake plants, spider plants, rubber plants, aloe vera or peace lilies are ideal choices for the bedroom.

Avoid the following if you want a truly chilled experience:

• Too much clutter. From books and ornaments to phone chargers and spare change, your bedroom can quickly become overcrowded – if you let it. Clean and clear your bedroom regularly, and place anything you don’t want or need out of sight.

• Electronics! Most modern-day devices will wreak havoc with your sleeping patterns, so keep the tech out of the room where you can. This includes desktops, laptops, smartphones, and landline phones (if you still have one!).

• Your workstation. We understand that space elsewhere in your home might be limited – but wherever possible, we recommend keeping your professional life OUT of your night-time sanctuary so you can really switch off from the day-to-day from the moment you walk through the door.
